Benefits mum jailed after crime spree.

A mother of seven who funded a life of luxury through crime while claiming benefits was jailed for six months yesterday.

Janis Gabriel (49) raked in pounds 2,000 a month in allowances for her children and disabled husband, John, Burnley Crown Court in Lancashire heard. She claimed to have won cash from bingo and said her husband was a 'penny pincher'.

But when police raided her council house in Padiham, near Burnley, last year they found pounds 18,000 in pounds 20 notes and bank accounts with thousands more.

Her three bedroom home was a 'palace' kitted out with a Jacuzzi, swimming pool and conservatory, fitted kitchen, sauna and a pounds 3,000 42-inch plasma TV screen.

Gabriel was found guilty of two counts of being in possession of criminal property after a four-day trial.

nPlans for new measures forcing witnesses to give evidence in court have been scrapped.

A Home Office spokesman said Ministers had 'decided not to go down the compulsion route'.

The majority of responses to a consultation paper published in October last year opposed the move.
