Belgium,Morocco : EU pens 4-year Protocol to FPA with MOROCCO.

A four-year Protocol to the Fisheries Partnership Agreement (FPA) has been penned between the European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Maria Damanaki and Moroccan Minister for Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries Aziz Akhannouch.

The total financial envelope for Morocco is expected to reach EUR 40 million. The aggregate cost of the new Protocol to the EU will more precisely amount to EUR 30 million annually, of which EUR 16 million reimburses Morocco for access to the resource.

The balance EUR 14 million will be allocated to the support of the fisheries industry in the country, whilst the ship owners' contribution would hit EUR 10 million.

According to a press release, the protocol is in line with the reform of the external aspect of the EU Common Fisheries Policy in that it strongly emphasizes financial profitability, scientific advice, good administration and respect of global law

It adds that sustainability has been ensured by limiting fishing activity to the surplus resources in all fisheries.

Commissioner Damanaki stated : "This is an important moment for EU and Moroccan fisheries. This deal will ensure a sustainable future for the sector locally and it represents good value for money. The new protocol is in line with the principles of the reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy, by ensuring responsible international fisheries governance."
