Being chased like animal, says Thampu.
EVEN as demands for his resignation get louder over the molestation row, St Stephen's principal Valson Thampu on Tuesday said that people should desist from character assassination. I am being chased like an animal in the case. I appeal to everyone concerned to avoid character assassination as the matter is sub- judice, Thampu said at a presser.
Social activist Swami Agnivesh and other members of the Delhi Minorities Association came out in Thampu's support and said that a mala fide campaign is being run against him and attempts are being made to control the course of law.
Thampu said, My lawyer and former judge Manmohan Sarin had told me this long back that attempts were being made to trap me in this case, and that I should immediately report the matter to the Internal Complaints Committee. When asked why he was not naming the elements behind the conspiracy to trap him, he said, The names are obvious and hence they don't need to be stated. However, I have full faith in the judiciary and that is why I have also demanded a CBI investigation into the matter. However, he mentioned the Old Stephanians Association, an alumni group which is not recognised by the college, as one of the elements who are after him.
I have done my best in the capacity of a principal but at the end of the day I am a human being. I have a wife and two daughters who also live in this society.
Since the matter is sub- judice, I appeal to all the elements concerned that this constant character assassination should be avoided, he said during the press conference.
Thampu also claimed that he is being dragged into the row which was supposed to be between the complainant and the accused, but the principal has become the principal offender in the case.
Meanwhile, the UGC official, who is in charge of the inquiry, had been reportedly told by the college authorities that lack of resources and cooperation from other members led to a delay in the inquiry. Referring to that he said, It should have been reported to me if individuals from the college did not cooperate.
If anyone from the college does that, I have the complete authority to force them to do so.
However, I cannot give a time frame for the ICC probe to be completed. While the Union HRD ministry has directed the ICC probe to be completed expeditiously and impartially, Delhi High Court has stayed the arrest of the accused assistant professor Satish Kumar till August 17.
Delhi Minorities Association has come out in Thampu's support and said a mala fide campaign' is being run against him.
