Beeb clear Chris over hunting row.

Byline: JOE NERSSESSIAN reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk

SPRINGWATCH host Chris Packham has been cleared by the BBC Trust after branding hunters part of "the nasty brigade".

The naturalist called for a ban on grouse shooting in an article in BBC Wildlife magazine last September.

It led to two complaints that he breached guidelines on impartiality and conflicts of interest.

The editorial standards committee found Packham had not broken a ban on BBC staff commenting on "controversial subjects" because he is not working in "news or policy output".

They found there was no breach of impartiality rules because the article was labelled as opinion and a right to reply was offered.

The report said Packham can associate himself with wildlife charities as he is freelance, not BBC staff.
