Beeb's golden Chiles needs to smarten up; THE FAR POST.

UBIQUITOUS Beeb presenter Adrian Chiles cut a shambolic figure on BBC Breakfast yesterday, slouching on the sofa of the Corporation's Beijing studio in an old polo shirt, scruffy shorts and trainers.

The borderline-overrated saggy-faced Midlander blamed the oppressive heat for his sartorial slovenliness, but when you've just signed a pounds 2m contract you really should be prepared to make the effort and endure a bit of a sweat.

The likes of Harry Carpenter, Des Lynam and Boughie, all of whom were meticulously attired whenever they appeared on screen, must have shaken their heads in sheer disbelief if they were watching.

Eggs bring in the bacon On the subject of breakfast, with everyone fed up with the increasingly dull Big Brother, Paddy Power this week took reality TV into their own hands by allowing punters to bet on which of ten eggs would be the first to hatch on their website

Pictures of the eggs were streamed live 24 hours a day, and over pounds 5,000 was riding on the head of the first chick, which hatched earlier than expected in a flurry of excitement on Thursday.

The firm's staff were left scrambling round for a name for the premature bird, before poaching the name of their boss and calling him Paddy.

Paddy Power himself was typically understated about the monumental event. He said: "Little Paddy must be the world's most expensive newborn chick. He is the poultry world's equivalent of Brad and Angelina's new-born twins."

Flagging already 'Yao Ming to carry flag for China', 'Foster to carry flag for Britain', 'Koreans refuse to march under same flag' - all headlines that were seen on the eve of the so-called greatest sporting event of the last four years.

Athletes from across the globe have been punishing themselves, neglecting their families and fine-tuning their bodies to perfection for their big occasion*, so is the biggest item of interest really who gets to carry a piece of cloth on a pole around a stadium?

*All except British boxer Frankie Gavin, for whom four years' notice of Beijing 2008 clearly wasn't enough as the 2-1 joint-favourite proved too porky at his weigh-in.

Villa to buy Aston?

Footballers love their cars - and Hills are betting on which celeb will be the first to land the amazing new Aston Martin One-77.

Many of the Premier League crew seem happy to lump around in hefty sports utility vehicles, but Hills see David Beckham as more discerning and make him 9-4 to land the sleek pounds 1.2m supercar first.

Hills - first to buy an Aston Martin One-77: 9-4 D Beckham, 3 Jay Kay, 7-2 R Abramovich, 5 C Ronaldo, 12 A Sugar, 14

Paddy Power are claiming that new-born Paddy is the world's most expensive chicken; British boxer Frankie Gavin (left) should probably have spent a little bit more time skipping
