Beeb's big debate was a let-down.

WHY on earth did the Beeb's leadership debate not have the same plain, simple and highly effective format as Question Time? The five candidates sitting round a table with schoolmistress Fiona Bruce in the middle wrapping knuckles when they talked over each other, all in front of a live, involved and occasionally heckling audience.

How much more of an event that would have been, as well as putting the Tory Boys to the ultimate TV test? Instead, The Next Prime Minister was a dire, contrived affair with candidates perched on swivelly stools, shouting through and through each other like bar-drunks.

Emily Maitlis, who runs such a tight ship and interrogates so ruthlessly on Newsnight, seemed emasculated; unable to do much more than plead - unsuccessfully - for order.

I suspect millions of us especially wanted to see Boris, pictured, de-blustered, pinned on the ropes, forced to explain past mistakes. What a let-down.
