Beck's a hit - in Wales.

ENGLAND football captain David Beckham (right) was today being crowned sports personality of the year - in Wales.

The Manchester United star beat a list of Welsh names including team- mate Ryan Giggs to the award voted for by viewers of a Welsh children's programme. The result came as a surprise to programme-makers as Welsh fans are not known for their support of the English national side.

A spokesman for Welsh channel S4C said: "Beckham... is a fashion icon and popular with girls as well as boys."
