Bayer's Polymers Division.

As completion of its diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) unit at its Baytown, TX facility nears, Bayer's Polymers Division announced it will idle an older MDI unit at the facility and cut imports of this key polyurethane component to North America. When completed in the third quarter of 1998, the MDI unit at Bayer's Baytown facility will have an annual production capacity of approximately 300 million pounds. As the new MDI unit comes on-line, Bayer will idle an older MDI unit which produces 110 million pounds annually at the Baytown facility. Idling the MDI unit will not affect employment levels at Baytown.
