Bay Networks Announces the Industry's First Comprehensive Network Management Solution for Service Providers

OptivityServices Combines Optivity Enterprise, Partner Software Applications

and Professional Services for Managing Complex, Multiservice Environments

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Bay Networks, Inc. Internet/Telecom Business Unit (NYSE: BAY) today announced the delivery of OptivityServices(TM) -- the company's open solution that delivers network management and customization services for service providers, including telecommunications carriers, Internet service providers and cable TV operators.

OptivityServices provides integrated network management capabilities for both the service provider edge infrastructure and the delivery of service provider managed services within the customer premise. The solution is based on three components: Optivity Enterprise(TM), a powerful network element management application for large networks; partnerships with best-of-breed vendors to offer additional software capabilities; and Bay Networks' Professional Services, which offer customization services for specific service provider environments.

To meet the network engineering and day-to-day operational requirements of service providers, Bay Networks has teamed with leading vendors Syndesis Limited for a service provisioning system; MIL 3, Inc. for network simulation and visualization tools; DeskTalk Systems, Inc. for large-scale data collection, WANDL, Inc. for network planning and analysis; and Anite Systems for billing applications. OptivityServices opens key Optivity Enterprise applications with modifications to include support for partner application integration and development, from performance monitoring to billing, as well as a broad range of non-Bay Networks devices. The Optivity Enterprise components focus on both the delivery of managed services within the customer premise and the management of networking equipment, including Bay Networks' 5000 Multi-Service Switch (MSX(TM)), Backbone Node (BN(R)) and Access Node (AN(TM)) router families and BayStream(TM) multiservice software, as well as Remote Annex(TM) servers and LANcity(TM) cable modems, deployed within the service provider edge infrastructure.

OptivityServices delivers comprehensive management for Bay Networks' BayStream multiservice software platform, which provides an integrated, streamlined solution for service providers offering VPN services to enterprise customers. The BayStream software runs on Bay Networks' backbone and edge networking devices and allows service providers to deliver seamless support for both IP and Frame Relay, as well as SNA traffic.

Optivity Enterprise Tools

OptivityServices leverages existing element management and troubleshooting tools available in Bay Networks' Optivity Enterprise network management suite and includes new application programming interfaces (APIs) for partner development, as well as multivendor device support for Telecommunication Management Network (TMN). Key features available through Optivity Enterprise include real-time performance monitoring, VLAN management, fault correlation, Autotopology(TM) and integration with trouble ticketing systems, which allow for the accurate depiction of network elements and their status and relationship to each other. The Enterprise Command Center(TM) provides a framework for viewing large, multiple networks and creates folders by logically grouping network resources by site or customer. Also, embedded RMON functionality offers tools for comprehensive information used for planning and analysis to improve control over service provider networks.

Based on industry standards, Bay Networks' Optivity Enterprise network management application operates on Hewlett-Packard's OpenView Network Node Manager, Tivoli's NetView for AIX and SunSoft's SunNet Manager.

Bay Networks Professional Services

Playing a key role in the delivery of OptivityServices, Bay Networks' worldwide Professional Services organization provides the customization services required to fully integrate Bay Networks' management services into the service provider network operations center. Bay Networks' Professional Services provide complete software installation and implementation, including customized reports, polling policies, integration of non-Bay Networks MIBs and automated data collection roll-up, as well as the launching of applications based on faults.

In addition, Bay Networks' ServiceLink(TM) offers service providers full scale implementation of network management tools and customization services that optimize the effectiveness of central site technical personnel. This service combines Bay Networks' worldwide network operations center with a dedicated staff of internetworking professionals to provide a comprehensive and customized approach to remote monitoring and management on a global 7x24 basis.

ServiceLink optional modules -- network management, device monitoring, software management and configuration management -- provide a connection between Bay Networks and a service provider's network infrastructure. Increasing network reliability, availability and maintainability, ServiceLink can be utilized by service providers as a back-up to central-site technical personnel, to cover the network at off hours, or as a complete outsource solution.
