Battle over Big Apple; NEW! DOCTOR WHO SAT, BBC1, 6.35pm.

With Daleks planning an audacious attack on humanity from the top of the Empire State Building and sinister pig-men patrolling the sewers, the Doctor's manic mission in Manhattan is simply magic.

In the midst of the great depression of the 1930s, people are disappearing from the shanty town in Central Park that thousands of down-at-heel New Yorkers call home.

But while Spooks starMiranda Raison whips up a storm as a showgirl and ex-Desperate Housewives hunk Ryan Carnes is brilliant as her pig-man lover, it's Holby City's Hugh Quarshie who catches the eye in an atmospheric two-parter. "I play Solomon, a First World War veteran who becomes the de facto leader of the shanty town," he tells us.

"People from Hooverville, as it was known, are being abducted and genetically modified - let's just say this has something to do with the pig-men."

While the pig-men's oinks could give us all nightmares, we're unlikely to dare to sleep after a thrilling confrontation with the Daleks

"Yes, there's a bit of a battle between humans and Daleks," teases Hugh.

READY... Let battle commence
