Battle of butter at Eryri winter 'rally' FIT OF GIGGLES AS YOUNG FARMERS HONE RURAL SKILLS.

Byline: ANDREW FORGRAVE Rural Affairs Editor

ERYRI'S young farmers were challenged to make butter at the county's Winter Fair on Saturday.

To general astonishment, some actually managed to produce a lump or two after shaking their cream vigorously for 10 minutes.

Watching on were Eryri YFC chairman Dafydd Sion Williams and his deputy Miriam Williams.

"We laughed a lot while the younger members tried to produce their butter," chuckled Dafydd.

This year's county Winter Fair day was hosted by Huw and Ellen Jones and family at Pengwern, Saron.

Now more akin to a winter rally than a pure fatstock event, it featured a variety of competitions besides stockjudging, from wreath decorating to Fferm Ffactor challenges.

Emerging on top, as winners of the Talmignedd Shield, was Ysbyty Ifan YFC, having earlier won the team stockjudging trophies in both the beef and carcase competitions. "It was nice to see all 11 clubs taking part in something on the day," said county president Guto Roberts.

"Which proves it's a day with something to offer all the members."

Event sponsors included WG Owen & Sons butchers, Caernarfon (Carcase competition) and O'r Parlwr i'r Porch (Fferm Ffactor Challenge).
