Bathroom and bedroom fireplace

There's romance in having a fireplace in your bedroom, but architect Russell E. Barto took the idea one step further and added one to his bathroom, too. As part of a remodel of his house in Palos Verdes Estates, California, he built in a two-way metal fireplace between the bedroom and bath. The wall widens slightly, stepping into each room to enclose the 30-inch-deep firebox.

Each side has its own traditional mantel, and the bedroom side has a removable metal fire screen. To help control the draw and provide noise control for the bedroom, Barto installed glass doors across the bathroom side's opening.
