Bassoon concerto premiere.

ALAN Pendlebury, the RLPO's principal bassoon, describes his instrument as the 'Cinderella' of the orchestra, and wants to urge more youngsters to take up playing it.

Now, at least for one night, Cind S erella is going to the ball.

And hopefully young musicians might be inspired by Alan's performance of a new Bassoon Concerto commissioned for him by the Phil from Wirral based composer Gary Carpenter which gets its premiere at Hope Street on Thursday.

Chief conductor Vasily Petrenko is on the box for the concert which also includes Grieg's Symphonic Dances and Sibelius's Fifth Symphony.

Meanwhile Gary is centre of attention the week after when the RLPO's contemporary wing Ensemble 10/10 celebrates his 60th birthday. See the ECHO arts page on November 14 for a full interview. ?
