Bassil from Argentina: We accord great importance to trade exchange between Lebanon and Latin America.

NNA - Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Gebran Bassil, highlighted Sunday the "great importance of trade exchange between Lebanon and Latin American countries," adding that "a lot is yet to be done at the diplomacy level." Bassil's words came during the opening session of the "Active Diplomacy Conference" at the "Four Seasons Hotel" in the Argentinean capital, Buenos Aeries, which is held for the first time in Latin America. The Conference included heads of diplomatic missions and delegations from Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Belize and Honduras. "This Continent is very important to us, for the number of Lebanese expatriates here is equivalent to three times the number of Lebanese in Lebanon," added Bassil. "Lebanon is a country that lacks the economic confrontation power; thus, comes the importance of the emotional force that binds the Lebanese with each other, and this is what we rely on in trying to strengthen and widen our presence amongst Latin American countries," said Bassil. He pointed to a lot of difficulties in this endeavor, but stressed that "such obstacles have to be overcome so as to achieve the desired results." It is to note that discussions during both morning and evening sessions of the Conference were devoted to 3 main topics, namely the expatriates side, as well as the financial, administrative and organizational work of various missions in Latin America, aiming at filling the gaps and coming-up with solutions to pending problems. Prior to the Conference, Bassil attended a dinner banquet held in his honor by Lebanon's Ambassador to Argentina, Antonio Indary, with a large number of Lebanese and foreign diplomatic and political figures attending. Bassil and his accompanying official delegation also took part in Sunday Mass held at Saint Maroun's Cathedral in Buenos Aries, in presence of members of the Lebanese expatriate community. ================ R.Sh.
