Basic Occupational Medicine: A Guide to Developing Delivery Systems.

Overall, this book is quite good. It is not very big, and it reads easily. I especially appreciated the author's comments on the responsibility of physicians in workers compensation and generally on handling these types of injuries or diseases.

Chapter 5, "Critique," should be especially helpful to physicians dealing with workers compensation injuries. The chapter presents case histories, including diagnoses and treatment programs. Each case is critiqued as to what was good and what was not so good about how the case was managed. A very important contribution to the chapter is the inclusion of how reports should be written for the cases.

The chapter on "Working with a Physician Assistant" is well-outlined, but it makes no mention of methods of reimbursement for the services of these health professionals. I note this only because billing practices for physician assistants in the area of workers compensation, in all but two states, are not applicable as they are for the Medicare program.

All in all, this is a fine book and should be on the shelf of any physician who has to deal with workers compensation injuries and illnesses.--Alfred Taricco, MD, Medical Director, Claim Medical Department, Aetna Casualty and Surety Co., Hartford, Conn.
