CARLOS DELGADO belted a mammoth two-run homer in the first play-off game of his 14-year career as the New York Mets won a thrilling opening game of the National League Divisional series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Shea Stadium.

Hit by injuries to two of their best starting pitchers, the Mets hitters took it upon themselves to win this one, but the 6-5 victory was also partly due to a base-running blunder by the Dodgers.

Mets catcher Paul LoDuca, a former Dodger, amazingly tagged out two runners at home plate on the same play to keep the second inning scoreless. In Minnesota, Twins centre-fielder Torii Hunter, one of the greatest defensive players in baseball, made a mistake in diving to try to reach a hit by Oakland's Mark Kotsay which became an inside-thepark home run that culminated in Oakland heading back home to Califrornia with a 5-2 win and a two-game lead in the best-of-five American League Divisional Series.
