Barracuda Networks Protects Customers from Infiltration and Exploitation by the Infamous Sony Rootkit; All Barracuda Networks Solutions Enhanced to Block Rootkit Communication and Stop Viruses.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Following the revelation that Sony BMG configured some music CDs to secretly install rootkits on its customers' Windows-based computers, Barracuda Networks, Inc., today announced that the Barracuda Spyware Firewall can successfully detect and block the rootkit's outgoing communication to the Internet. In addition, the Barracuda Spam Firewall prevents the download of subsequent viruses that malicious attackers created to piggyback on the program via email attachments.

The rootkit is installed by DRM (Digital Rights Management) software that is included on certain Sony music CDs. Once installed, the rootkit hides spyware-like software onto the system, which can alter the functionality of the computer as well as monitor and send information about the user's computer activity to Sony -- all without the user's explicit permission.

"We are committed to protecting our customers from unauthorized software that is installed on computers, especially when this software attempts to contact servers on the Internet," said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. "The Barracuda Spyware Firewall is capable of detecting the Sony software and will notify the system administrator who can then take the appropriate corrective actions to restore the infected PCs."

In addition, because the rootkit makes the software undetectable by the computer or computer user, hackers have quickly learned how to exploit the rootkit by creating and deploying viruses that are automatically cloaked.

"The Sony rootkit has created a back door which hackers are exploiting," added Drako. "To date, engineers at Barracuda Central have detected at least three virus strains which are spreading via email attachments."

In response to these threats, Barracuda Networks quickly updated the Barracuda Spam Firewall to protect customers from unknowingly installing the ensuing viruses.

"Most client anti-virus programs are unable to detect the rootkit or these particular virus strains once they are installed on the system because the rootkit changes the operating system at such a low level, that in many cases Windows is not even able to detect that it exists," said Drako. "Because the Barracuda Spam Firewall is equipped to block the virus attachment at the gateway, the virus never makes it to the user's computer."

As Barracuda Networks' engineers detect and learn of new security risks, such as Sony's rootkit, updates are immediately made to Barracuda Networks' spyware and virus definitions. Barracuda Energize Updates automatically arm each Barracuda Spyware Firewall or Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest definitions. It is not necessary for Barracuda Networks' customers to manually update or make any changes to their Barracuda Spyware Firewall to protect their network from new types of spyware and viruses.

"The Barracuda Spyware Firewall and Barracuda Spam Firewall continues to provide powerful protection from spyware, malware, viruses and other security risks to thousands of customers around the world," said Drako.

About the Barracuda Spam Firewall

The Barracuda Spam Firewall is available in six models and supports from 1,000 to 30,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. The Barracuda Spam Firewall can be installed in front of the email server in typically less than five minutes and is automatically updated hourly to block new forms of spam and viruses. Its architecture leverages open source spam and virus solutions in conjunction with ten defense layers: denial of service and security protection, IP block list, rate control, virus check with archive decompression, proprietary virus check, user specified rules, spam fingerprint check, Intent Analysis, spam rule-based scoring, and Bayesian analysis. In addition, the entire Barracuda Spam Firewall line features simultaneous inbound and outbound email filtering with the inclusion of sophisticated outbound email filtering techniques such as rate controls, domain restrictions, user authentication (SASL), keyword and attachment blocking, dual layer virus blocking and remote user support for outbound email filtering. The Barracuda Spam Firewall's layered approach minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Unlike software solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on the email server by off-loading both spam and virus filtering. Barracuda Networks also offers the Energize Update subscription service to automatically update the Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest spam rules and virus definitions.
