Bargello socks.

Wear bargello, a type of embroidery associated with the medieval city of Florence, on your feet! Worked in stranded knitting, zigzags in varying widths create an allover pattern. Place the stripes at random or use a self-striping yarn as the contrast color to make your pair of socks unique.

Yarn Weight 1

Finished Size 7 (8, 9)" foot circumference and 9 (10, 11)" long; foot length is adjustable. Socks shown measure 8".

Yarn SweetGeorgia Yarns Tough Love Sock (80% superwash merino wool, 20% nylon; 425 yd [388 m]/4 oz [115 g[): cauldron (black; MC) and goldmine (gold; CC), 1 skein each.

Needles Sizes 1 1/2 (2.5 mm) and 2 (2.75 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions Markers (m); tapestry needle.

Gauge 32 sts and 36 rnds = 4" in leg patt on larger needles.

* These socks are worked in the round from the cuff down with a heel flap.

* The charts are worked using the stranded method. Always pick up the first color over the second and pick up the second color from under the first; this will prevent tangling. Keep floats loose. For floats longer than four stitches, tack stranded yarn on wrong side of work.



With MC and smaller needles, CO 56 (64, 72) sts. Place marker (pm) and join in the rnd. Work 16 mds in k2, p2 rib. Knit 1 rnd. Change to larger needles. Work Rnds 1-49 of Bargello Stripes chart. Break CC.

Heel Flap

Heel is worked back and forth over 28 (32, 36) sts centered on beg of the rnd; the rem 28 (32, 36) sts of rnd will be worked later for instep. Change to smaller needles. Set-up row (RS) Remove m, k14 (16,18), turn.

Row 1 (WS) S11 pwise wyf, p27 (31, 35), turn.

Row 2 (RS) SI 1 pwise wyb, k27 (31, 35), turn.

Rep last 2 rows 11 (12, 13) more times. Turn heel using short-rows as foil:

Short-row 1 (WS) SI 1 pwise wyf, p16 (18, 20), p2tog, p1, turn.

Short-row 2 (RS) SI 1 pwise wyb, k7, ssk, k1, turn.

Short-row 3 SI 1 pwise wyf, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, pi, turn.

Short-row 4 SI 1 pwise wyb, knit to 1 st before gap, ssk, k1, turn.

Rep last 2 short-rows 3 (4, 5) more times--18 (20, 22) heel sts rem.

Do not turn after last short-row. Shape gusset: Set-up rnd 1 With MC and RS facing, pick up and knit 12 (13, 14) sts along right side of heel flap. Break MC. Set-up rnd 2 With MC and RS facing, beg at left side of heel flap next to instep sts, pick up and knit 12 (13, 14) sts along left side of heel flap, k9 (10, 11), pm for new beg of rnd--70 (78, 86) sts total: 28 (32, 36) sts for instep, 42 (46, 50) sts for sole. Change to larger needles. Join CC. Note: While working gusset and foot, work through Rnd 55 of chart, then rep Rnds 5-55 to desired length.

Set-up rnd [With CC, k1, with MC, k1] 6 times, with CC, k1, with MC, k2tog, pm, beg and ending with st 1, work Rnd 50 of chart over 41, 49, 57 sts, pm, with MC, ssk, [with CC, k1, with MC, k1] 6 times--68 (76, 84) sts rem.

Rnd 1 Work in patt to m, si m, work chart to m, si m, work in patt to end.

Rnd 2 Work to 2 sts before m, with MC, k2tog, si m, work chart to m, si m, with MC, ssk, work to end--2 sts dec'd. Rep last 2 rnds 5 more times--56 (64, 72) sts rem: 28 (32, 36) sts each for instep and sole.


Work even until foot measures about 6 1/2 (7 1/4, 7 1/2)" from back of heel or 2 1/2 (2 3/4, 3 1/2)" less than desired finished length, ending with Row 11, 18, 23, 29, 37, 44, 49, or 55 of chart. Work Rows 56-58 of chart.

Next rnd Work in patt to last 7 sts, removing all m. Break CC. With MC, k21 (23, 25), pm for new beg of rnd. Change to smaller needles.

Toe: Next rnd K28 (32, 36), pm, k28 (32, 36). Dec rnd *K1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before m, k2tog, k1, si m; rep from * once more--4 sts dec'd. Rep dec rnd every other rnd 4 (6, 8) more times, then every rnd 5 times--16 sts rem: 8 sts each for instep and sole. Break yarn, leaving a 12" tail.


With tail threaded on a tapestry needle, use Kitchener st to graft sts tog. Weave in ends. Block.
