Bare skin cheats; The new skin look for autumn/winter demands a barely-there foundation. WM tested out five of the latest on counter now, and found you don't need to sacrifice on coverage...
WE SAY: After a few weeks, my skin looked and felt great. Coverage, although light, evened out tone and toned down redness. I only needed a pea-sized amount and my skin looked smooth, giving the impression I was wearing no make-up.
L| 2. Clarins Skin Illusion Mineral Loose Powder Foundation SPF 10, PS28 THEY SAY: An ultra fine, silky loose mineral powder combining the coverage of a foundation with the lightness of a powder to give the illusion of flawless, bare skin. It comes in a boudoir square jar and hidden brush, and uses Pink Opal spherical microbeads to boost radiance.
Available in six shades. WE SAY: Though it looks good on your bedside table, I wouldn't carry this around in my bag. The inner plastic lid on mine was stubborn and opening it ended up with my lap covered in powder. Packaging aside, it's a lovely foundation that feels as light as it gives great coverage and oil-resistance. It lasted all day at work and gave my skin a hint of warmth while still looking natural.
C| 3. Origins Plantscription SPF15 Anti aging foundation, PS28 THEY SAY: This oil-free, age-defying liquid foundation helps to visibly correct the appearance of lines and wrinkles both immediately and over time WE SAY: It had a thicker texture and provided heavier coverage than my usual foundation, but once well blended it gave a natural, matte finish, staying on well for the whole day. The Light Neutral shade was perfect for my fair colouring - there are 12 to choose from.
Mo| 4. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation SPF15, PS30 THEY SAY: Natural coverage meets 12-hour wear, available in 18 shades, this unique formula will not look mask-like, giving you the option of medium to full coverage.
WE SAY: Foundation is the cruellest of cosmetics. A good one can make you look like you live a blameless, carefree life and a bad one can make you look like you lost a scrap with some smeary pan stick. This is gladly the former. A creamy foundation, it's not thick and cakey, but neither is it watery and ill-looking. The shade matched my tone perfectly, so the blending around my jaw and hairline was really easy, and the whole effect was what we want from our make-up - so smooth and natural, you wouldn't even guess I was wearing any.
KM| 5. Guerlain Parure de Lumiere Fluid, PS36.50 THEY SAY: Light and fluid, it fuses with the skin to boost radiance and moisturise, using prisma light 360 pigments to recompose pure and immaculate light, delivering freshness, making imperfections seem to disappear.
WE SAY: Out next Tuesday, this lightweight foundation is also available in a creme. You get a beautiful, almost pearl finish with this light-diffusing fluid, which I found similar in coverage to Chanel's Aqualumiere. A great product if you're looking to cover lines rather than blemishes, and it lasts well without the need for too many powder touch-ups. Personally, it just wasn't heavy duty enough for "spotty" days.
