Bare bones of drama put Jethro in the clear.

PETTY Officer Kyle Hanson is the lead suspect in a Navy drug-smuggling ring, but when the agents head to a naval base to arrest him, they find the man lying dead on the floor of his house, apparently mauled to death.

When McGee approaches the back of the property, he is forced to shoot an aggressive dog after it attacks him. Inside, a large bag of cocaine and a pile of cash is found under Hanson's bed.

Bite marks in the coke bag suggest that the dog may have eaten a quantity of the drug, NCIS (five, 9pm) which explains its violent behaviour.

Ducky's findings suggest the victim, a Navy dog handler for the drug enforcement unit, was indeed killed by his own animal.

However, despite mounting evidence, Abby does not believe the wounded dog was responsible and refuses to hand the animal over to Navy officials.

The Navy dog handler, PO Erica Perelli, goes to NCIS HQ to pick up the animal, but neither Abby nor the dog are anywhere to be found.

The Goth boffin has taken the animal, now named Jethro, back to the naval base in search of further evidence. However, the plot takes an unusual twist when Jethro unearths a skeleton..
