BarPoint.com Brings Wireless Shopping to Palm VII Organizer.
Universal Barcode Provides Instant Access to Product-Specific
Information for Over 100 Million Products Placed in Consumers Hand
BarPoint.com (OTC Bulletin Board: BNPT), the company that is redefining universal product barcodes to connect consumers with what they want -- anytime, anywhere, today unveiled the BarPoint Shopper web clipping application v1.0 for the Palm VII(TM) connected organizer from Palm Computing (Nasdaq:COMS). The BarPoint Shopper web clipping application allows consumers to wirelessly access product-specific information on over 100 million bar-coded products and will ultimately allow customers to purchase products on a wireless basis through the BarPoint.com website. The application will be available October 21, 1999 for free download onto the Palm VII organizer at www.barpoint.com and will be available from www.Palm.net in November 1999.
The BarPoint Shopper web clipping application for the Palm VII is the first application to take advantage of the power of online shopping and the immediate access of wireless computing using any product's unique barcode. Consumers will be able to obtain comprehensive information on more than 100 million retail products by entering the specific 12 or 13 digit UPC code in the BarPoint.com search window from their Palm VII device. This information includes detailed product descriptions, manufacturer contact information, comparative pricing data and direct links to product review and reports.
"The BarPoint Shopper web clipping application empowers consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions," stated Leigh Rothschild, chairman and CEO of Barpoint.com, Inc. "By placing critical product, competitive, and purchasing information directly and immediately in the hand of the consumer, a new wealth of knowledge is now available at the point of purchase."
"BarPoint.com has effectively taken advantage of the immediacy and wireless connectivity available in the Palm VII device," said Jim Kruger, product manager for Palm.Net services for Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company. "The combination of the Palm VII organizer and the BarPoint web clipping application gives the consumer more resources and flexibility in making purchasing decisions."
Initially, shoppers will be able to search a selection of product categories that include books, movies (dvd and video), music, and computer hardware and software, with new categories being added regularly. In the first quarter of 2000, BarPoint.com will expand this service to allow consumers to complete online transactions directly from their Palm VII device.
The BarPoint.com Shopper web clipping application is based on the company's patent-pending UPC-based search technology that enables consumers to easily obtain product-specific information armed only with a product's unique barcode. Unlike most Internet search technologies, BarPoint does not use "key words" or "search phrases" to find a product, removing the complicated and time-consuming process of "drilling down" through layers of search results and information that is typically associated with finding information on the Internet. In doing so, BarPoint returns search results that are tailored for the needs of the consumer who wants to make informed shopping decisions, whether online or retail.
BarPoint.com is the single, authoritative source for mobile Internet commerce; bridging the gap between the broad selection of products offered online with the confidence and satisfaction of retail shopping. Using BarPoint's comprehensive Internet database and a handheld device, consumers can instantly obtain comparative pricing, product and manufacturer information, etc. for more than 100 million items, using a product's unique barcode. Whether using a handheld device to scan or manually enter the product's UPC or even accessing BarPoint's website from a desktop computer, BarPoint.com is the most direct route to better, more informed purchasing decisions -- anytime, anywhere.
