Bar review: Hustle Lounge Bar, Nicosia.
If you like busy bars, eyefuls of beautifully dressed people, a no frills drinks menu and music reverberating from inside, outside and all around, then you'll also like Hustle Lounge Bar.
Hustle is not about the latest concoctions in the cocktail world, exclusive organic wines, tantalising flavours, mixologists or carefully made homemade syrups. It is a venue where people can go, be seen, see and party hard until the early hours of the morning.
Open only three times a week, it keeps the party fresh and its fans satisfied. Wednesdays are Vice Wednesdays which are mainly attended by the younger university crowd, Fridays are Greek nights and Saturdays are Greek and English tunes with DJs from Athens. It can get very busy, especially over the weekends, so best book a table in advance.
The look and feel of the place is pimped up industrial warehouse, with super high ceilings and structures made with ropes, naked bulbs and metal hanging from above. It is a large rectangular venue with high chairs and tables scattered around inside and out to encourage people to sit and hover around. There are two large rectangular bars; one inside and one outside and the sliding glass between the areas makes it feel like one huge space.
From the minute you step in the bar shouts 'party'. It's not the kind of place to go and chill out, socialise with friends or have a quiet drink alone; it's a fun place with loud music and lots of eye candy. And if you go for early drinks, there's a strong feel of things brewing; as the staff dash around seemingly preparing for things that haven't happened yet. Still, the weekends see people beginning their evening earlier, with platters of meat, cheese, fruit and other snack food before the night kicks in (not available on Wednesdays.)
It was not easy getting a cocktail on this particular Wednesday as apparently they didn't have some of the cocktail ingredients in (due to it being mainly a student night although I was informed that the weekends do have more cocktails on hand.)
There was no drinks menu available either (it is currently being modified and will be available soon) however, the bar staff explained that they generally offer about four different bottles of red wine and the same number of whites. They have a couple of sparkly wines and the usual suspect beers plus around six different types of classic cocktails including Long Island, Cuba Libre and signature drinks such as Hustle Passion. It seems that their most popular drinks are spirits with mixers.
The emphasis seems to be on the old school concept of kicking back with a vodka mixer and enjoying loud club-like music and people, before crawling back home a few hours prior to sun rise.
