Banking on Hanks.

NEW YORK Tom Hanks took the stage of one of Gotham's most exalted performance spaces April 27 and posed the rhetorical question that had been on the minds of many all night.

"Who knew that F-bombs would be dropping on Alice Tully Hall?" he said.

A starry cavalcade took turns praising and roasting filmdom's ultimate Everyman at the revamped Tully in between film clips, several peppering their remarks with curses. The dinner and show for 1,100 raised $1.2 million for he Film Society of Lincoln Center, which is in the midst of a bold expansion as part of the arts complex's makeover.

Presenters included Charlize Theron, Steven Spielberg, Julia Roberts, Bruce Springsteen (who played an acoustic version of "Streets of Philadelphia"), Sally Field, Jonathan Demme, Nora Ephron and Robert Zemeckis.

Roberts despaired of wearing the same dress as one of Hanks' publicists, derided "The Terminal" and "The Ladykillers" and otherwise made like a sailor. "Tom Hanks: What the fuck?!" she summed up.

The guest list also included Michael Lynton, Richard Plepler and Richard Lovett plus Mara Manus, Richard Pena and Ann Tenenbaum from the Film Society.
