Bank swindler jailed over cruel OAP con.

A callous bank worker who tricked a frail pensioner out of pounds 8000 was yesterday jailed for nine months.

Cruel Andrew Weir, 31, told 81-year-old Adam Beck he would invest the money on his behalf.

But instead he secretly used the cash to pay off gambling debts.

Sheriff Alistair Noble said jail was the only punishment that fitted the crime.

But he added he would restrict the term because Weir had repaid all the money to his victim.

Paisley Sheriff Court had heard earlier how Weir, an investment adviser with the TSB's Linwood branch, convinced Beck to fill out bank withdrawal slips in 1994.

Another ploy involved the OAP writing out a personal cheque in Weir's name.

But Beck became suspicious when Weir couldn't show him any documentation and reported his worries to the bank, who launched an investigation.

Weir, of Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, admitted defrauding his victim of pounds 8000.

Sentencing him, Sheriff Noble said: "A custodial sentence is inevitable given the gravity of the offence."
