Bamboo proves lucky for business.

A BUSINESS specialising in replica plants has landed its biggest ever order to build giant bamboo trees for a new pounds 300m hotel in London.

The team from Office and Reception Planters in Gateshead will be heading off to the capital to build the 12m bamboo poles in the atriums attached to the new Park Place Hotel at Westminster Bridge.

Charlie Rutherford, who runs the business with wife Laura, said: "It is the largest single order we have ever received.

"There will be 164 bamboo poles up to 12m high going into the side atriums in the hotel. It is a 14-storeybuilding, and each storey has its own atrium.

"We have a team of six and we are going to be full on at the moment. It will be five weeks of making them solidly, it will take all six of us. We will be making them in the building."

The Rutherfords, who took over the business in 2006, have been working hard to secure this type of order to grow the firm.

"We have been canvassing the various hotel chains. We struck lucky and contacted them at the time they we looking for something," said Rutherford, a former professional rugby player who played for London Scottish. "It's a great opportunity for us to get with them. Although they are UK-based, they have hotels all over the world. They are currently building another one beside the airport in Amsterdam and we are hoping to talk to them about that."
