Balmy end to 2011 as Brits party.

BALMY Britain ended 2011 warmer than the Med as thousands enjoyed one of the mildest New Year's Eves ever recorded.

Yesterday's 15C fell to just 12C at midnight in the South, with Scotland at 8C, the Met Office said. And today is due to be mild too, reaching 12C with sunny spells - almost as warm as May.

The unseasonal conditions led to huge outdoor party crowds.

More than 250,000 were expected for London's Olympics-themed fireworks spectacular and 100,000-plus at Edinburgh's Hogmanay.

Britain put overseas cities in the shade, beating 13C daytime peaks in Paris, Cyprus and Palermo, Italy, as well as 7C in Madrid and 2C in Moscow.
