Balance of payments deficit at $289.8 mln.

BEIRUT: Central Bank figures said that Lebanon's balance of payments posted a deficit of $289.8 million in January 2012, compared to a deficit of $772.1 million in the same month last year and a surplus of $691.5 million in December 2011.

The January 2012 deficit was caused by a shortfall of $187 million in the net foreign assets of banks and financial institutions and a deficit of $103 million in those of the Central Bank.

The balance of payments posted deficits in January 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011.
