Bail Set For Omaha Teen Accused Of Tossing Newborn Out Of Window.
A Nebraska judge set bail at $500,000 for a 16-year-old girl accused of giving birth and then throwing the infant out a second-floor window, killing it.
The teen has been charged as an adult, but the (http://bigstory.ap.org/33ffb766851d4fcfbe0b856161782a29?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AP) Associated Press reported her public defender is attempting to get the case moved to juvenile court.
Investigators said the teen was alone when she gave birth prematurely to a girl Friday and allegedly tossed the two-pound baby out the window. The baby girl was pronounced dead after she and the teen were taken to Creighton University Medical Center.
Police identified the teen as Antonia Lopez. She was taken to the Douglas County Youth Center. Police have not revealed how far along Lopez was in her pregnancy, the (http://www.omaha.com/news/metro/year-old-girl-throws-baby-out-nd-story-window-after/article_7b9900a0-86f4-11e6-971f-d364798f54e5.html) Omaha World-Herald reported . "The child wasn't a stillborn," Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said. "To be booked on that count, the child would have had to have been born alive."
The World-Herald said it was unclear exactly when the baby was born Friday, but Lopez posted on Facebook at 3:40 a.m., asking for a ride. She then notified her mother, who summoned help. The mother found the infant outside their Omaha apartment building in the grass and performed CPR until paramedics arrived at 4:12 a.m.
Lopez's Facebook page says she is a junior at Central High School. The World-Herald said she and another girl were charged with shoplifting cell phone cases from a Walmart last year. She was sentenced to six months probation. (http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/Family-Needs-Help-Locating-Missing-Teen-323528731.html) WOWT reported Lopez has a history as a runaway.
Lopez's grandfather, John Barcelona told KETV he is "stunned" by what happened and was unaware his granddaughter was pregnant.
"In my head, I just can't believe it, I can't believe it," Barcelona said.
Lopez next is scheduled in court Nov. 2.
