Baguio mayor eyes tenements for informal settlers.

By Zaldy Comanda

BAGUIO CITY - Affordable tenement housing to help ease the proliferation of informal settlers in the city is one of the projects being eyed by Mayor-elect Benjamin Magalong.

Magalong said single detached houses are no longer feasible in the city because of inadequate land space, and informal settlers must learn to accept the idea of living in tenement houses.

He is eyeing a portion of the eight-hectare property ceded by the Department of Agriculture (DA) to the local government as a site for tenement housing.

Magalong admitted that he learned from his consultations with the people during the campaign period that there is a demand for affordable mass housing, and tenement projects are the ideal answer.

Earlier, the city government put in place its local shelter plan that outlines the programs and projects to address the housing requirements of the people.

The Baguio government is conducting a head count of the number of individuals that need housing units so that concerned government agencies can draw up a housing plan to address the growing housing backlog.
