Badminton: YUAN 'RITA' WEMYSS.

YUAN 'RITA' WEMYSS has started the new year in style with victory at the Portuguese International at Caldas da Rainhas.

The Dumfries ace, who is 29 on Friday, gave herself an early birthday present with victory in the women's singles after coming from behind to beat Swiss star Jeanine Cicognini 7-11 11-3 11-8 in the final.

Wemyss missed out on a double when she and Bulgarian partner Petya Nedeltcheva were beaten by German duo Sandra Marinello and Katrin Piotrowski 8-15 15-11 15-2 in the women's doubles final.

National high performance coach Dan Travers said: 'It was a great effort by Rita. She had to cope with some long, tough matches.'
