Backpacker Brit killed in stab frenzy; Houseboat horror in India.

Byline: Lewis Panther

A British backpacker has been stabbed to death on a houseboat in India.

Sarah Groves, 24, was found with multiple stab wounds early on Friday on the boat where she had been staying at Dal Lake, in Srinagar.

She had been in the Kashmir capital for the last 25 days, sight-seeing alone.

Last night, a Dutch tourist named as Richard De Wit was arrested on suspicion of her murder after he fled 45 miles away without any shoes.

The owner of the New Beauty Boathouse G M Sodha, who found Sarah, described her as very friendly, warm and "like a daughter" to him.

Sarah and the Dutch tourist were the only guests on the houseboat and had been sitting on the deck until midnight when she went to bed, he said.

Later, at around 2.30am, his sons heard an argument and screams and went to investigate.

They said they saw the Dutch tourist leaving the houseboat in a rowing boat, but it capsized and he had to swim to the shore.

They then found Sarah lying dead in a pool of blood in her room with multiple stab wounds.

De Wit was found in a taxi, in Qazigund, known as the Gateway of Kashmir, 45 miles from Srinagar. Police took him back to the city for questioning.

Abdul Ghani Mir, the police inspector general of Indian-administered Kashmir, said: "The Dutch national had fled from the houseboat in the night, leaving behind his belongings.

"He was trying to flee from the Valley, carrying only his passport.

"While preliminary investigation has confirmed that the woman was murdered, we are investigating other angles."

A post mortem will now be carried out.
