Back To School At Breckenridge Village Bringing Income Boost

The occupancy rate at Breckenridge Village, the aging open-air shopping center at I-430 and Rodney Parham, got an unusual boost recently when neighboring Walnut Valley Christian School leased 6,500 SF for classroom space.

Walnut Valley outgrew its space at 10618 Breckenridge Drive and recently signed a four-year lease with Breckenridge manager Flake & Co. Grades five through nine will occupy the west side of the complex and school principal Roger Yancey says the move is a natural for both the school and the retailers.

"Our kids will be their customers," Yancey says, "and this will also bring the parents in to shop." A former retailer himself, Yancey met with merchants to calm fears about vehicle congestion and assure them that the school would stay put under a four-year lease.

"If the merchants take advantage of this," Yancey notes, "they're going to have an immediate traffic flow."

Interestingly enough, the school is not the only new tenant for Breckenridge this fall. Jox Ultimate Sports Bar and Grill, a restaurant featuring a large-screen, electronic golf course, will open later this month in the home of the former Urban Grill.

Can't you just see these kids spending their recess and lunch money playing big-screen golf and eating pretzels? Skip Lackey, a Little Rock native is one of the partners in the new venture. Lackey was formerly a game show host on the Nickelodeon television network--how appropriate.
