Back on the road with new milling machines: Ingersoll Rand re-enters milling segment with two new machines; also adds three new pavers; five new vibratory compactors.

In a move intended to close the gap in its road development equipment line, Ingersoll Rand has marked its re-entry into the road milling segment with two new milling machines, the MW-500 and MT-2000. With those additions--the first since the company discontinued its milling segment in 1995--Ingersoll Rand now offers equipment for each phase of road construction and maintenance. Along with the two new milling machines, Ingersoll Rand has also launched three new pavers and five new vibratory compactors.

"With the introduction of our milling machines, Ingersoll Rand road development has a full complement of milling, paving and compaction products," said Gary Michel, Ingersoll Rand road development president. "These milling machines represent an example of design leadership for the Ingersoll Rand road development business."

The smaller of the two milling machines is the new MW-500, a four-wheeled rear-loading utility class machine with a 20 in. cutting width and 8.25 in. maximum cutting depth. It is powered by a Deutz diesel engine rated 125 hp at 1800 rpm, which is packaged with an AKG cooling system incorporating an independently driven on-demand cooling fan.

Power is transferred from the engine via a tensioned belt drive to power the all-wheel drive hydrostatic transmission, which consists of Bosch Rexroth pumps that drive Sauer-Danfoss wheel motors. The all-wheel drive assembly incorporates Anti-Slip Control (ASC), which is designed to work in conjunction with Ingersoll Rand's Line Manager System to allow the operator to maintain a constant speed of operation and direction without being affected by the rotation of the 30 in. diameter drum.

The MW-500 milling machine is also equipped with dual operator stations, Grammer seats, a dust suppression system, night work lights, ground level control panels and a conveyor with 25[degrees] of movement. Turning radius on the machine is 7 in., which Ingersoll Rand said allows the MW-500 to compete with three-wheeled machines and gives it application in patching, cutting manholes and joints, utility work and trenching.

The MT-2000 is the larger of the two milling machines, configured as a four-tracked half-lane machine that can accommodate 78.75 and 86 in. drum widths.

Powering the MT-2000 is a 15 L six-cylinder Cummins Tier 3 QSX-15 diesel engine rated 600 hp at 1800 rpm. The engine is housed within a walk-in engine compartment, which also provides access to hydraulic components and coolers. A Cummins Filtration air cleaner and AKG cooling system with reversing fan are also included in the engine package.

The drivetrain on the MT-2000 utilizes Bosch Rexroth hydraulic pumps and Sauer-Danfoss wheel motors, which drive four Everpads tracked undercarriages. The milling machine has five steering modes: front, rear, coordinated, crab and circle, which is designed to allow the MT-2000 to turn within its own length.

Three drum cutting speeds are offered on the MT-2000 for deep, shallow and standard cutting, along with a 36 in. wide gathering and discharge conveyors that are independently controlled through variable speed adjustments to meet the capacity of the cutting drum. Conveyor capacity is 1330 cu.yd. per hour, according to Ingersoll Rand. The MT-2000 also features a dust suppression system; dual operator stations; work-at-night lights and eight different diagnostic screens for the engine, hydraulics, truck loading and grade control available in eight different languages.

The MT-2000 milling machine is produced in Shippensburg, Pa. Production is scheduled to begin at the end of this year into early 2007. While the MW-500 and MT-2000 are Ingersoll Rand's first two milling entrants, the company said it is planning a full product range of six milling machines with cutting widths from 20 in. up to 14 ft. The MT500 milling machine will be produced in Hameln, Germany, at the Ingersoll Rand ABG facility, where production is slated for late 2006 or early 2007.

Drawing from its experience with Blaw-Knox and Titan, Ingersoll Rand has also filled out its paver lineup with the new PF-6110 track-mounted paver and PF-6160 and PF-6170 wheel-mounted pavers.

The PF-6110 has a 14.4 ton hopper capacity for a production rate of 820 tons and a paving speed of 246 ft. per minute. Screed width is 10 ft. with a maximum paving width of 26 ft. The PF-6160 and PF-6170 machines are wheel-mounted pavers also with 14.4 ton hopper capacity, an 820 ton production rate and a paving speed of 293 ft. per minute. Screed width is 10 ft. and paving width is 26 ft.

All three pavers are equipped with a 5.9 L six-cylinder Cummins QSB5.9 Tier 3 electronic diesel engine rated 205 hp at 1800 rpm. The engine is packaged with a Cummins Filtration air cleaner, on-demand hydraulic-driven fan and AKG radiator.

The major difference between the three paver models is in the design of the undercarriage, with all three integrating a hydrostatic direct-traction drive supplied by Sauer-Danfoss pumps, which drive Blaw-Knox motors through Sauer-Danfoss valving to either a Camoplast rubber track system with six pairs of oscillating bogies on the PF-6110 or two-speed planetaries for the PF-6160 and PF-6170 pavers.

The PF-6160 is configured with front wheel assist, and PF-6170 is available with two-wheel or a fourwheel assist option. Hydraulic bogie cylinders provide uniform loading on all four wheels for both machines which are designed to provide a higher ground clearance, maximum traction and less wear and tear on the paver. The PF-6110 tracked paver model comes standard with a BlawKote release agent spray system to keep the tracked undercarriage clean.

A 30 kW Leroy Somer generator is also included on the pavers, which Ingersoll Rand said can be used to power tools and lighting from the four 110 V outlets. Other features include a new layout and digital display with onboard diagnostic capabilities, dual control stations and independent auger and conveyor systems.

The PF-6110, PF-6160 and PF6-170 pavers are produced in Shippensburg, where production began at the end of 2006. Their introduction was also complemented by a new line of screeds comprising the Omni 318 front-mounted vibratory power extendible screed, Omni 300 fixed screed, Omni 306 strike-off screed, Omni 1000 rear-mounted vibratory screed, Omni 1010 vibratory single-tamping screed and Omni 1020 vibratory dual-tamping screed.

Five new vibratory compactors were also introduced by Ingersoll Rand in both small and large chassis platforms. The small chassis lineup consists of the 2.5 ton DD-22 and DD-24 models. Drum width on these machines is 39 and 47 in.

Both the DD-22 and DD-24 compactors are powered by a three-cylinder Cummins A1700 diesel engine rated 32 hp at 2500 rpm, which drives the Bosch Rexroth closed-loop hydrostatic drive. An additional Rexroth motor powers the compactors' electrohydraulic drum vibration system which offers dual vibration settings of 3300 vpm (low) and 4020 vpm (high). A 68 gal. water system is also standard along with four sprinkler settings and a four-nozzle spray bar.

The DD-22 and DD-24 asphalt compactors are manufactured in Shippensburg and will be available in January 2007.

The three new large chassis asphalt compactors are the DD-92HF, DD-98HF and DD-98HFA. These compactors compete in the 9 ton class and have 67 in. drum widths. The DD-92HF and DD-98HFA are two amplitude machines, with the DD-98HFA incorporating additional features such as Ingersoll Rand's SMART technology system for optimized density and smoothness, SMART water system and SMART propulsion system to maintain speed smoothness. The DD98HF compactor is an eight amplitude model that Ingersoll Rand said allows for faster rolling speeds.

Driving the DD-92HF, DD-98HF and DD-98HFA is a four-cylinder 4.5 L four-cylinder Cummins QSB4.5 diesel engine rated 130 hp at 2200 rpm. While still in the prototype stage, Ingersoll Rand has incorporated a closed-loop hydrostatic drive system that runs parallel to both drums on the compactors. This system incorporates Poclain heavy-duty radial piston wheel motors on the DD-98HFAwith drum vibration of 3000 to 4200 vpm driven by a Sauer-Danfoss motor. Drive and vibration components have not been finalized on the DD-92HF and DD-98HF compactor models, which have a drum vibration of 3000 to 4200 vpm for the DD-92HF models and 3804 vpm on the DD-98HR

The DD-92HF, DD-98HF and DD-98HFA compactors are manufactured at Ingersoll Rand's Shippensburg facility and will available in the second quarter of 2007.

Ingersoll Rand's road development products fall under the umbrella of its Construction Technologies sector, which also produces portable air compressors, light towers, generators, earthmoving equipment, material handlers, concrete equipment and attachments.
