At KTHV-TV, Channel 11, two anchor chairs will sit empty for stints this fall. Dawn Scott, a co-anchor during the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts, and Alyson Courtney, who co-anchors the morning show, are both pregnant.
Scott went on maternity leave after her first pregnancy. She said returning to an anchor chair after taking a break is no problem.
"It's kind of like riding a bike: Once you learn, you never forget," she said. "Balancing your home life and work life and making sure everyone gets what they need is the challenge."
The station will most likely enlist reporters to fill the seats during the time the anchors are on leave, Chuck Maulden, KTHV's news director, said.
"The thing about a pregnancy is you have time," Maulden said. "It could be a reporter who wants a shot. Sometimes we will just go with one anchor."
Pregnancies often become large events that interest many viewers, said Maulden, who has been in television for more than 30 years.
"The pregnancy is part of the community. When you are on air, you can't help that," Maulden said about the inquiries many viewers will send to the station and the anchorwomen.
KARK-TV, Channel 4, nightly news anchorwoman Jancey Sheats is also pregnant, but with twins. News Director Rob Thomas said the station has not decided exactly how it will fill in for her during her maternity leave.
"We're not sure, but we have several people capable of anchoring," Thomas said, adding that Bob Clausen, Sheats' co-anchor, may go it alone on occasion.
Thomas said experience shows that the pregnancies of anchors become something viewers take an interest in.
"Obviously, if you have a favorite show, you want to know about the people in it," he said.
