BYKER PROMOTED TO VICE PRESIDENT AND APPOINTED TO GENTEX BOARD OF DIRECTORS

ZEELAND, Mich., August 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Harlan J. Byker, Ph.D., was recently promoted to vice president of Electrochemical Research at Gentex, and was appointed to the company's board of directors. Both appointments are effective immediately, and he will stand for election to the board at the company's annual meeting of shareholders in May 1994.
"We believe that Dr. Byker will be a valuable asset as a member of the Gentex board of directors," said Gentex Executive Vice President and Director Kenneth La Grand. "He is the research scientist who discovered the chemistry that allowed electrochromics to be successfully transformed from a longtime laboratory phenomena into a commercially viable product. The Gentex electrochromic Night Vision Safety(TM)(NVS(R)) Mirror was the world's first successful commercial application using electrochromics, and Dr. Byker was a crucial member of the team that developed the NVS(R) Mirror."
Dr. Byker jointed Gentex Corporation in 1985 as director of Electrochemical Development. This move was facilitated by his success as the key research scientist on the electrochromic project that was sponsored by Gentex at Battelle Columbus Laboratories in Columbus, Ohio. He was with Battelle Columbus Laboratories for six years.
His undergraduate studies were conducted at Calvin College, followed by Montana State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1976. Three years later he received his doctorate in physical chemistry from Montana State. Dr. Byker is a member of the American Chemical Society, The Electrochemical Society of America and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He resides in Holland, Mich., with his wife, Terri, and three children.
Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: GNTX) is headquartered in Zeeland. The company develops, manufactures and markets proprietary elector- optical products: patented automatic-dimming interior and exterior Night Vision Safety (NVS) Mirrors for the worldwide motor vehicle industry, and an extensive line of fire-protection products for commercial applications.
