BUSY ON TOUR, NICKS NIXES MOTHERHOOD.

Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

Stevie Nicks figures she'll pretty much sideline her personal life during Fleetwood Mac's reunion tour in support of its ``The Dance'' album and video. She'll pick up where she's leaving off with friends and family when the tour winds up in November. What she won't be returning to is her former wish for motherhood.

The pop diva, who seriously considered adoption awhile back, says she's come to the conclusion that the working mother's life won't work for her. ``I have a newfound respect for moms,'' she says. ``When I'm at my house in Phoenix, I live with my 5-1/2-year-old niece and my brother and sister-in-law. And I now really understand what an incredible commitment it is to have a child, and how difficult it is. I know I could not have done both. I'd have ended up having to stop doing my music, or pretty much letting someone else raise my child - which would have made me very unhappy - or I'd have ended up kind of a half-assed mom and a half-assed rock musician.

``And I don't want to bring children into a world of crazy rock 'n' roll,'' adds the songstress, who knows that crazy world as well as anyone. ``I mean, people have asked, `Are you going to take your dog on tour?' No! I don't want her to go out there and get sick and die. So, to drag a kid around on the road? I don't think that's right.''

Nothing's routine about Nicks' life right now, what with a jammed schedule of tub-thumping for ``The Dance'' (the album's out today; the home video is due in a week) and preparing for the 40-date tour Fleetwood Mac begins Sept. 17. And she feels just fine about that. ``This is a great adventure.''

Men at play

New York Yankee All-Stars Bernie Williams and Luis Sojo just may have found fallback careers in case the defending World Series champs tank in the second half of the season. Williams and Sojo earned raves from Paul Simon the other day when they sat in on a jam session rehearsing for Simon's upcoming Broadway musical, ``The Capeman'' (begins previews at the Marquis Theater on Dec. 1). With Williams on guitar and Sojo playing percussion, the jocks were good enough to play alongside their friend, Ruben Blades (who brought them along to the rehearsal), salsa sensation Marc Anthony and Puerto Rican superstar Ednita Nazario - and to be invited back to play more. Sojo had to pass - he broke his wrist in Thursday's game.

In the family way

Actress Melora Walters and her actor husband, Dylan Walsh (``Brooklyn South''), are expecting a girl at the end of November. Melora stars in the upcoming ``Boogie Nights'' with Mark Wahlberg and Julianne Moore. This will be the second child for the couple, who were married March 20, 1996. They have a 15-month-old son, Thomas Charles Walsh.

The daily bump 'n' grind

There will be a sexy strip club dancer added to the cast of characters on ``Beverly Hills, 90210'' come fall - a new love for Michael (Thomas Calabro). She's a psych major named Amber who's working her way through college via naughty dancing. What'll they cook up next?
