PHILADELPHIA, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Businesses opened new or expanded existing facilities at 228 locations in 1991 along rail lines operated by Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR).
Rail freight transportation service to and from these facilities is expected to generate about $150 million in annual revenues for Conrail. Local economies will benefit by the $1.5 billion invested in the plants and the nearly 6,300 jobs they are creating.
Major projects last year included: automotive loading and delivery facilities in Michigan; food warehouse and distribution centers in New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania; steel facilities in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania; and a light railcar manufacturing plant in Massachusetts.
More than one-third of the facilities locating or expanding on Conrail last year were distribution centers or warehouses, and about one-quarter are manufacturing plants. Other industries represented included: bulk commodity transfer, processing and packaging, recycling, energy production, and mining/quarrying.
"We're pleased that so many companies decided to build on our system," said James A. Hagen, Conrail's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "In addition to Conrail's quality freight transportation service throughout the Northeast and Midwest, we work closely with companies to help them find appropriate properties in communities that welcome their business."
