BUSINESS RECORDS CORPORATION ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS

DALLAS, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Business Records Corporation Holding Company (NASDAQ: BRCP) announced that, due to a required accounting change for the company's treatment of income taxes, its first quarter earnings would be substantially greater than those reported for the same period last year. The company's first quarter earnings were $4,752,000 or $.84 per share on revenues of $14,465,000. This compares to $1,712,000, or $.32 per share, on revenues of $19,838,000 for the same period last year.
Excluding extraordinary items related to the company's treatment of income taxes, the company's earnings were $962,000, or $.19 per share, as compared to $1,579,000, or $.30 per share, reported for the first quarter of 1992.
P.E. Esping, president and chief executive officer of the company attributed the underlying decrease in earnings to the normal downturn in the company's revenues from elections products and services which is usually experienced after the conclusion of a presidential election year. Esping also noted that the company's acquisition of CMSI, Inc., announced last month, is expected to cause a pre-tax charge of at least $7 million to the company's second quarter earnings associated with the portion of the purchase price related to CMSI, Inc.'s research and development efforts. The company expects to consummate the acquisition within the next two weeks.
The extraordinary item, was caused by the required adoption of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 109, "Accounting for Income Taxes." The company was required to adopt this new standard no later than the first quarter of this year.
The company, headquartered in Dallas, provides information systems and services to local governments nationwide.
