BUSINESS DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE TO BE OFFERED THROUGH LINCOLN TELEPHONE, HUNTEL

OMAHA, Neb., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- American Business Information, Inc., (NASDAQ: ABII) (ABI), a leading compiler of information on U.S. business, has announced the formation of an alliance with Nebraska-based Lincoln Telephone Company and Huntel Systems to create a new nationwide business directory assistance service.
"Business Directory Assistance" operates similarly to directory assistance, but requiring less information from the customer. If a customer tries to locate a day care center in Houston, but doesn't know the exact name, Business Directory Assistance can help them find it. If a customer has the name of a business but doesn't know where they're located, the service can help them find an address and phone number. If a firm wants to know how many pizza restaurants are located in Minneapolis, Business Directory Assistance can find that number, too.
"We've always been service-oriented," said Karen Hunt, general manager of Huntel Systems, "but now a caller can get even more information assistance. For example, if a caller needs the names of all the hospitals in Chicago, we can give the information to that person right away."
Jim Strand, president of Diversified Services for Lincoln Telephone, said his company has provided yellow page listing information to its customers for years. "This opportunity to expand the information base to a national scope, as well as the amount of information that is available, really improves the service we can provide our customers," he said. "It makes us a one-stop source for enhanced directory assistance."
ABI compiles the information from the more than 5,000 Yellow Page directories, business White Pages, annual reports, SEC filings, and public records. Over 14 million direct telephone calls are then made to further verify and enhance the information of each business.
"The growth potential for this type of service, as well as the growing need for quick, accurate information, is staggering," said ABI's president, Jon D. Hoffmaster. He said a Coopers & Lybrand study showed the potential of servicing 200 million calls per year, calls which presently go unanswered.
Hoffmaster said ABI is exploring additional alliances with other phone companies nationwide.
Business Directory assistance is accessed through a toll-free number (800-808-INFO). A free video explaining the use of Business Directory Assistance is available by contacting Hoffmaster.
American Business Information, Inc., recently named one of the 50 best small growth companies by Business Week Magazine, is an Omaha- based compiler and distributor of business information to nearly 300,000 customers worldwide. Founded in 1972, ABI is a publicly-traded company (NASDAQ Symbol, ABII).
