BURGER KING INTENDS TO REMAIN IN SOUTH FLORIDA; EMPLOYEES
AFFECTED BY DISASTER WILL RECEIVE HELP
MIAMI, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Burger King, whose headquarters building near Cutler Ridge, Fla. was severely damaged by Hurricane Andrew, said today that the company intends to remain in South Florida and that it was unlikely employee levels would be affected by the disaster.
Barry J. Gibbons, chairman and CEO of Burger King, emphasized that full operations would be re-established in South Florida as soon as possible. In the meantime, Gibbons said, employees who worked in the world headquarters building of Burger King or in damaged Burger King restaurants could avail themselves of a variety of services to assist them in recovering from the storm. This would include assistance in finding temporary shelter if necessary.
A temporary command center for Burger King has been set up at the south entrance to the headquarters buildings, and the company is attempting to establish lists of employees who are either in need of help or who are able to volunteer to help others. Employees are being encouraged to obtain more information at the center, or use a 24-hour crisis number -- 800-767-5756. Informational meetings will be held each day at approximately 11 a.m. at the center.
Burger King is a subsidiary of the International Retailing sector of Grand Metropolitan PLC, one of the largest international companies in the United Kingdom and a world leader in drinks, retailing and food. Sales are in excess of $15 billion. Other U.S. subsidiaries include Carillon Importers, GrandMet Foodservice USA, Haagen-Dazs, Heublein, the Paddington Corporation, Pearle Inc. and Pillsbury.
