BUMBLE BEE SEAFOODS INC. OFFERS OVER $1 MILLION TO EARTH ISLAND INSTITUTE THROUGH 'FREE WILLY' CONSUMER REBATES

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Bumble Bee Seafoods Inc. is offering over $1 million to Earth Island Institute through consumer rebates from a promotional tie-in with the videocassette release of the feature film "Free Willy."
Consumers who submit six proofs of purchase from Bumble Bee Seafoods products along with the rebate form packed inside each "Free Willy" videocassette will receive a $3 rebate by mail. They can help support Earth Island's ongoing whale conservation programs by checking a box of the rebate form that directs their $3 rebate checks to Earth Island Institute. In addition, consumers may separately submit proofs of purchase from three cans of Bumble Bee Seafoods products and receive the "one sheet" poster from the film.
"Bumble Bee supports Earth Island Institute's efforts to protect and preserve marine mammals," explains John Trierweiler, Bumble Bee's senior director of marketing. "Bumble Bee also sponsored the public service announcement for Earth Island that appears at the beginning of the video and features the environmental group's 800 number (800-4WHALES)." A similar PSA tagged on the end of the feature film generated over a quarter of a million calls from moviegoers.
"The amount of money Bumble Bee contributes to Earth Island Institute depends entirely on consumer participation," says David Phillips, executive director of Earth Island Institute. "We hope that consumers show their support for marine mammals, like whales and dolphins, by claiming the rebates and directing them to us.
The summer box office hit that tells the story of an orphaned boy who frees a friendly whale from a rundown aquarium, "Free Willy" captures the attention and hearts of adults and children. "The people who love this movie -- primarily, families with young children -- are the same people who purchase the majority of our tuna," says Trierweiler.
Bumble Bee is merchandising and promoting the rebate offer, which expires Dec. 31, 1994, at grocery stores across the United States and is hoping to reel in the majority of participation during the coming holiday season.
Based in San Diego, Bumble Bee Seafoods Inc. is one of the world's largest distributors of canned seafood products and the No. 2 tuna producer in the United States.
