BUDD ANNOUNCES $10 MILLION WHEEL/BRAKE ORDER FOR NEW LIGHTWEIGHT SYSTEM

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- John Williamson, president of The Budd Company's Wheel & Brake Division, said today the company has received $10 million in orders from Great Dane Trailers, Savannah, Ga., and Navistar International, Chicago, for wheels, brake drums and hubs.
These components will be used for a new lightweight freight container and chassis developed for J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc., Lowell, Ark.
"This is on-going business," Williamson added. "In the first year, the division is scheduled to supply state-of-the-art Uni-Mount-10(R) wheels, brake drums and hubs for more than 10,000 trailer-like chassis and highway tractors.
"The Hunt program is slated to be spread over four to five years with the final number of chassis to be determined later."
Developed and tested at the Wheel and Brake Division's headquarters in Farmington Hills, the Budd systems have a special feature that helped an all-out effort to curb weight while designing the new chassis and containers. The wheels have five hand holes, rather than the standard two, saving two pounds per wheel.
Hunt's new containerized freight plan calls for cargo to be collected in lightweight containers moved on the chassis. Lifted off the chassis, filled containers are shipped over long distances on rail cars. At the destination, containers go on chassis kept there for local delivery.
Budd's Wheel & Brake Division produces a wide range of steel disc wheels for commercial vehicles, demountable rims, as well as hub and drum assemblies for heavy duty vehicles and drum and disc components for passenger cars and light trucks.
The Budd Company of Troy, Mich., is a leading supplier to the automotive industry.
