BRUTE WHO LIFTED BABY UP BY EARS IS SET FREE; Anger over sentence.
FURIOUS relatives hit out yesterday after a brute who shook a crying four-month-old baby avoided a jail sentence.
Aron Peters, 26, picked up the child from her pram by the ears and threw her on to a settee during the attack.
At the High Court in Edinburgh, an aunt of the child cried out 'How is that justice?' after Peters was placed on probation for two years.
And outside the court, another relative stormed: 'It's a joke that you get away with that. We were expecting him to go to jail.'
The court heard that Peters was babysitting the child at a house in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, when the attack happened in January.
After the child's mum returned home, she noticed the baby had bruising around her ears and right shoulder.
The baby was taken to hospital where a scan revealed she had suffered a slight brain haemorrhage.
Peters, formerly of Comrie Crescent, Hamilton, later told police that the baby had been 'whingeing' and added: 'I was heavy handed ... I know I have done this.'
He was originally charged with attempted murder but admitted the reduced charge of assault to severe injury and danger to life.
Paul McBride, QC, defending, said Peters had been left in the house with a number of young children, including the victim.
He added: 'What he did in a brief loss of control was utterly unacceptable.'
Lord Abernethy said Peters, who has a drink problem, had expressed genuine remorse for the attack.
He went on to say that the seven months Peters had spent in jail since the attack was the equivalent of a 15-month sentence.
