   BROWNING-FERRIS NAMES JEFFREY E. CURTISS AS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT,
                        CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
    HOUSTON, Texas, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. (NYSE: BFI) announced today the election of Jeffrey E. Curtiss as senior vice president and chief financial officer of the company.
    Commenting on the election of Curtiss, William D. Ruckelshaus, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Curtiss brings the skills and background necessary to carry the company forward into the future, and the company's management is enthusiastic about his joining BFI."
    Curtiss joined BFI after more than two years as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Heritage Media Corporation, a Dallas-based $500 million AMEX corporation involved in advertising and promotional services for retail supermarkets, drugstores and mass merchandise stores.  Heritage also operates ten radio and six television stations.
    Prior to his position at Heritage, Curtiss was chief financial officer of the $600 million Coleman Company of Wichita, Kan., and previously was for several years associated with G. D. Searle & Company, serving from 1986 to 1988 as vice president, finance.  He was also with Monsanto Company earlier.  His responsibilities have included international finance, development and planning, and a broad range of tax, treasury and financial management duties.  Curtiss has a BS degree in Business Administration and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska, and a Master of Laws from Washington University, in St. Louis.
    Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. is one of the largest publicly-held companies engaged in providing waste services.  Subsidiaries and affiliates collect, transport, treat and dispose of commercial, residential and municipal solid waste and industrial wastes.  BFI subsidiaries are also involved in recycling, resource recovery facilities, medical waste services, portable restroom services, and municipal and commercial sweeping operations.
