 BROWNING-FERRIS INDUSTRIES AWARDED $210 MILLION, SEVEN-YEAR
 PHILADELPHIA SOLID WASTE CONTRACT
HOUSTON, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. (NYSE: BFI) today announced it was awarded a seven-year contract by the City of Philadelphia, Pa. to dispose of approximately 70 percent of the city's municipal solid waste. The contract was ratified by the City Council this morning, after four months of evaluation of competing proposals for both cost savings and environmental impact.
"We are pleased that Philadelphia has picked BFI to manage their solid waste," said William D. Ruckelshaus, BFI's Chairman and CEO. "This contract is a recognition of the quality of our service and efficiency of our operations."
"We think this contract is a trend-setter," said Fred Snyder, regional vice president for BFI. "It creates the right incentives for recycling and waste minimization by eliminating any put-or-pay requirement and gives the city predictability in its budgeting to the year 2000."
Under the terms of the agreement, BFI will dispose of approximately 550,000 tons of waste per year from the city. The bulk of the waste will be collected by city trucks and taken to a BFI transfer station in the city. From there, it will be transported to a BFI landfill. BFI estimates the total value of the contract at approximately $210 million.
Nationwide, BFI has some 940 municipal contracts providing residential collection and disposal services. The company has some 6.1 million residential customers and provides recycling services to over 2.5 million households nationwide.
Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. is one of the largest publicly-held companies engaged in providing waste services. Subsidiaries and affiliates collect, transport, treat and dispose of commercial, residential and municipal solid waste and industrial wastes. BFI subsidiaries are also involved in recycling, resource recovery facilities, medical waste services, portable restroom services, and municipal and commercial sweeping operations.
