BROWNING-FERRIS INDUSTRIES ACQUIRES HOVING AND SONS IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO

HOUSTON, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc., (NYSE: BFI) today announced that a subsidiary has acquired Hoving and Sons, Inc., Oak Brook Disposal, Inc. and related operations in downtown Chicago. Browning-Ferris Industries of Illinois, Inc. purchased the common stock of Hoving and Sons, Inc. and Oak Brook Disposal, Inc., and the assets of the related operations, known as Carroll Paper Recovery, Inc. Details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Hoving and Sons, Inc., Oak Brook Disposal, Inc. and Carroll Paper Recovery, Inc., with combined 1992 annual revenues of $11.5 million, are the three elements of a third generation waste hauling business that started in 1913. The five family members operating the companies today will remain in place as BFI employees. The acquisition puts BFI in the downtown Chicago market for the first time.
Hoving and Sons operates a full service recyclery for commercial and industrial customers. The recyclery, with a capacity of 200 to 300 tons per day, processes high and low grade paper and paperboard, along with aluminum, plastic and glass. The clean, sorted secondary materials are baled or otherwise prepared for shipment to consuming mills.
Hoving and Sons also operates a transfer station, with a capacity of 800 to 1,000 tons per day. Waste processed for disposal in the transfer station will now be disposed of in the BFI Mallard Lake landfill in Hanover Park, Ill. The company also operates a rear loading and roll- off business serving commercial and industrial customers in the greater Chicago area.
Oak Brook Disposal has a municipal contract with the suburban village of Oak Brook that calls for the collection of residential waste and recyclable materials from approximately two-thirds of the village. The company also provides commercial and industrial services in the village.
Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. is one of the largest publicly- held companies engaged in providing waste services. Subsidiaries and affiliates collect, transport, treat and dispose of commercial, residential and municipal solid waste and industrial wastes. BFI subsidiaries are also involved in recycling, resource recovery facilities and medical waste services.
