BROWNING-FERRIS ANNOUNCES INCOME FOR FIRST QUARTER OF FISCAL 1993

 HOUSTON, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. (NYSE: BFI) today reported net income for the first three months of fiscal 1993, ended December 31, 1992, of $52,287,000 or 31 cents per share, on revenues of $848.2 million. These results compare with net income for the comparable prior year period of $40,298,000, or 26 cents per share, on revenues of $801.3 million.
 "We are encouraged by the improvement in quarter-to-quarter revenues and earnings compared to last year," said William D. Ruckelshaus, Chairman and CEO. "The earnings per share results are especially heartening, given our 10 percent increase in the number of outstanding shares since last year.
 "At the same time," he went on, "we know we need to keep at our cost control and customer satisfaction efforts. This is a solid start for fiscal 1993, but our job now is to build on this successful beginning."
 The number of common and common equivalent shares used to compute first quarter net income per share was 169,803,000 versus 153,698,000 in the first quarter of fiscal 1992.
 Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. is one of the largest publicly-held companies engaged in providing waste services. Subsidiaries and affiliates collect, transport, treat and dispose of commercial, residential and municipal solid waste and industrial wastes. BFI sbsidiaries are also involved in recycling, resource recovery facilities and medical waste services.
