BROWN NAMED CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF CRUM AND FORSTER; VAIRO RETIRES
STAMFORD, Conn., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph W. Brown, Jr., 43, has been named chairman, president and chief executive officer of Crum and Forster, Inc., the Basking Ridge, N.J.-based property and casualty insurance unit of Xerox Financial Services, Stuart B. Ross, executive vice president of Xerox Corporation, announced today.
Brown succeeds Robert J. Vairo, 61, who is retiring after nearly 17 years with the company.
The new head of Crum and Forster was president and chief executive officer of Fireman's Fund Insurance Company until Dec. 1991, when he resigned.
"Jay is a well respected leader in the insurance industry and shares our commitment to excellent service for Crum and Forster customers and value for Xerox shareholders," Ross said. "He is the right leader for Crum and Forster in these challenging times and will continue to focus the organization's energies on improving returns and preparing to seize the opportunities of the '90s."
Concerning Vairo, Ross said: "Bob has been at the helm of Crum and Forster during a period of intense challenge to the industry, one that has necessitated difficult, but critical decisions. He has led the organization through this pivotal time with both compassion and skill. While we will miss him on a day-to-day basis, we will continue to benefit from his counsel as a member of the board of directors of Crum and Forster."
Brown joined the actuarial department of Fireman's Fund in 1974 and, after a series of promotions, was named chief financial officer in 1984. He was elected vice chairman in 1986 and chief operating officer and president in 1989. Shortly after Allianz A. G. acquired Fireman's Fund in 1989, Brown was named chief executive officer. He is vice chairman of the American Insurance Association; a member of the board of MBIA, Inc., the Institute for Civil Justice, the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters, and the Insurance Institute of America. He is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and the Society of Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriters.
Vairo joined the Crum and Forster organization as vice president- underwriting, U.S. Insurance Group in 1975, after more than 20 years in the insurance business with the Atlantic Companies and Fireman's Fund. He was named president of the U. S. Insurance Group in 1981, president and chief operating officer of Crum and Forster, Inc., in 1987, chief executive officer in 1988, and chairman in 1990.
He is the current chairman of the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and the former chairman of the American Insurance Association and the Insurance Services Office.
