BROOKTROUT TECHNOLOGY UPDATES Q1 ESTIMATES

NEEDHAM, Mass., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Brooktrout Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: BRKT) today announced it expects revenues for the first quarter 1993 to increase by about 40 percent over the first quarter 1992. However, despite this growth, revenue for the quarter is anticipated to be below current expectations by about 10 percent.
In the first quarter the company experienced slower than expected growth in product shipments in the customer premises equipment (CPE) market segment for its TR Series product line. This resulted in a change in product mix when compared to its internal plan. In addition, there was a delay in the delivery of vendor software impacting first quarter shipments.
"Aside from this slower than anticipated revenue growth, which we believe to be partly seasonal, demand for our TR Series is strong," said Eric Giler, Brooktrout's president. "The company experienced a similar fourth quarter to first quarter revenue pattern last year. Despite these short term fluctuations, we believe that the enhanced fax products market will continue its long term growth trend as the base of business applications expands and gains increasing customer acceptance. We remain confident of our current and future product technology and our competitive position in the market."
"Our operating expenses for the quarter are right on plan but the reduced revenue will affect income from operations," added Bob Leahy, Brooktrout's CFO. "However, this earnings shortfall will be offset by an extraordinary item due to the prospective implementation of FASB 109, accounting for income taxes." It is anticipated net earnings will be in line with current analyst expectations.
Brooktrout is a market and technical leader in voice and facsimile messaging. The company was the first to introduce multi-channel fax cards, combine voice and facsimile on a single card, use Direct Inward Dial (DID) for autorouting of facsimile messaging, and provide facsimile support for UNIX platforms.
