BROOKTROUT TECHNOLOGY TO INCORPORATEMICROSOFT AT WORK ENHANCED FAX CAPABILITIES

NEW YORK, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Brooktrout Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:BRKT) today joined Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MSFT) and other facsimile industry leaders to announce facsimile messaging capabilities that will be incorporated in Microsoft's new Microsoft at Work(tm) architecture. Brooktrout will enhance its TR-Series fax and voice processing boards to deliver Microsoft At Work's new fax capabilities.
The Microsoft At Work fax services announced today will enhance the power of facsimile massaging by providing new capabilities and integrating facsimile messaging into the Microsoft Windows(tm) operating systems. Fax machine users will be able to send documents at much higher resolution than possible with existing fax machines, and PC users, for the first time, will be able to send editable documents via fax to other PCs. These messaging capabilities will be fully integrated into the Windows operating system as well as numerous office equipment products.
"Microsoft is using facsimile to create a Windows-based, anywhere- to-anywhere messaging capability," said Kurt DelBene, product manager in Microsoft's digital office systems group. "Microsoft At Work fax services will make facsimile messaging better and easier than it is today."
Brooktrout will incorporate support for Microsoft At Work in its TR-Series enhanced fax and voice boards to enable developers of enhanced fax and voice processing systems to fully utilize Microsoft At Work's fax capabilities. Its TR114 universal port board firmware will be upgraded to support Microsoft At Work fax protocols in the on-board digital signal processors. Brooktrout's applications programming interface will also be modified to integrate seamlessly with the Windows-based fax interfaces.
"By fully integrating facsimile messaging into its operating systems, Microsoft will change the way computer users communicate," said Eric Giler, Brooktrout's president. "Enhancing Brooktrout's TR-Series fax and voice boards and our applications programming interface will enable developers to incorporate this rich messaging capability in their high volume fax servers and systems quickly and cost-effectively."
Brooktrout is a leading supplier of fax and voice boards to developers of enhanced fax and voice processing systems. These developers include service bureaus and telephone companies offering fax- broadcast, fax-on-demand and integrated fax and voice response services; voice messaging companies integrating fax with their voice-mail systems; and developers of fax servers for local area networks and host-based computer systems.
The company's TR114 universal port cards offer full fax and voice processing capabilities from software-controlled digital signal processors on each channel of the four and eight channel boards. Brooktrout's applications programming interface and driver software reduce applications software development time for systems developers by providing an easy-to-use C-language library of commands.
Brooktrout was the first to introduce multi-channel fax cards, combining voice and facsimile processing on a single card. It holds a patent on fax-on-demand document retrieval.
